I agree with all of you that the oboe is so difficult to tune to especially because the horns always want to jump in first to get their pitch, then the trumpets play louder to play over the horns, and the trombones play a big tuning slide anyways, so they're always screwing with the pitch. There really is no answer. One solution i'd propose is a method of droning, where you can play intervals around the "A" so that the intervals are in tune (ie. 5th is 2 cents higher, etc.) except...that only works if the piece you're playing happens to be in A Major/minor. I think that it was probably just a thing to help the strings and by force of habit it became the industry standard.
