I did an experiment once, which you can try on any instrument with good valves and no venting. While playing loudly on the first valve, release it. Immediately stop playing and depress the valve, and *pop*. You DO increase the pressure above the ambient pressure when you play, and if you release the valve while playing you will trap that pressure. This alone is enough to tell me that, even if you are not pulling slides, venting is a good thing.

Joe Baker, who gets around this problem by playing only instruments with leaky valves and solder joints.
