I know exactly what you mean with the Schilke 51D problems. I used to play on one for a very long time, then tried the SM4, then the SM3. Once I got adjusted to the size, the SME just is awesome for me. Feel wise, it just fits my face. And responsiveness is just unmatched for me. With the Schilke, if I try to play a low C just above pedal Bb with a meaty "bass trombone" sound, it cannot be accomplished as easily or fluently as with the SM3 on ANY euphonium. I played the Willson for a long time with the Schilke set up. I then switched to the SM3M (to fit the Willson 2900) and loved it. I am now moving to a Prestige 2052 (I found a good one where the valves actually work!) with the SM3 set up and it's just amazing all around for me. Just make sure that the mouthpiece/horn set up does not affect your air flow and how you want to sound.
