Why do we pronounce we pronounce "Vaughan" as vawn, and not vag-han?

Because modern pronunciations aren't the same as historical pronunciations, especially with English which is a mixture of several very different languages. The modern pronunciationg of "Ralph" in the U.S. is different from the English pronunciation of "Ralph" in the 1870's. Vaughan Williams was pretty clear about his preferences, so we needn't bother saying "they".
