I would suggest there is a middle ground in learning the fingerings. Since I am a band director, I know how to play trumpet(Please realize that I don't practice trumpet--I am a tuba player through and through). In learning Eb tuba, I found my trumpet knowledge to be helpful. As long as things stick to the key signature, this approach is extremely helpful. It is not, however, a complete solution to the problem of learning all the fingerings and becoming fluent in playing the music with those fingerings. I suggest a combination of the two approaches mentioned above. Good luck! It can be both a challenge and fun.
