I'm sure folks have heard this story before. It is, of course, important that those who seek to buy tubas (or, really, anything) but know nothing about it that they get some advice first.

But that is water under the bridge, and clearly your husband had sterling intentions. Whatever magic that bestows on the gift seems to have had its effect--you have an instrument you can enjoy playing while others have not been so fortunate.

My first tuba as an adult was a Besson Stratford, which, despite the long history of excellent instruments by that company before and since, was unworthy in many ways. Yet it was a start, and I enjoyed playing it despite its weaknesses (and my own). Without it, I would never have started playing the tuba again, so it was worth whatever it cost just for that.

It is also possible that the Chinese are getting better. Nobody ever doubted that they would.
