Geeeeeez haven't you guys heard anything other than those old Chicago recordings, as good as they are, but they are not the only interpretations.
Ever heard of the great but not well known (commercialy)conductor Gunter Wand?? He was known esp. for Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner. And the recordings he made with the Berlin Phil, Cologne Radio Orch, and the NDR (North Germn Radio Symph Orch) are just great.
Particularly the ones with the NDR (Walter Hilgers' old orchestra), all recored live in Hamburg Music Hall; and there is an 8 and 9 recorded in the Leubeck Cathedral in Hamburg live (Wand/NDR) which really have an amazing feel and character to them as they are recorded in a church, full of people, the way maybe Bruckner intended??
Also the German brass and woodwind sound is so much different to other orchestras around the world, I guess thats personal, but it's very good indeed.
Anyway, check it out, the Wand recordings are with RCA, maybe check out the RCA Victor website??
good luck
