I agree with your viewpoint. For some reason, the brass seem very underpowered in Barenboim's Berlin remakes. For the BPO, I prefer the recent Gunther Wand remakes (his final recordings), or the earlier Karajan ones. Before Karajan, the Eugen Jochum ones were quite good, as were some of the *live* Furtwaengler items (but certainly not all of them). I'm talking just the BPO here.
