Of course there is always room for improvement. The people I refer to have alot of talent, but don't do alot to develop their skills. This is not true of everyone, but seems to be a common problem.
Sound quality is very important to directors, especially with the tuba sound. They all seem to have their own idea about what good tone is these days. Unfortunately, tone quality is the most subjective part of tuba playing. There is alot of disagreement about what a tuba should sound like. I think if you use lots of air and fill the horn with vibration, your tone should improve. Listen to as many pro orchestra players as possible and try to emulate your favorites. You'll be surprised how much you get out of just listening.
