From what I've heard around the corner, the reason selections for BSO haven't been made is because the players that have made the auditions have not gotten the type of transparent blending sound that Chester emulated when he played with them. I know all the auditioners are good players, but as far as the kind of sound Seiji and the other members of the committee were looking for, they don't have it.
