I've got to go with the pistons. The mechanism is far more simplier and more reliable than the rotors. If that is the only criteria than the answer to your sub questions is the 1295. For the past 8 years have been an exclusively rotor player on my Cervany CCB-683-5M. I too was face with the the same dilema about two months back and opted to buy two axes for what the 1295 runs. I got a Kalison DS CC slightly used but in great shape and a brand new Holton TU330CCS. I thought that I'd be using the Kalison for the larger stuff but after listening to live recordings of both axes the Holton seems to fit most if not all my playing needs. If you've got you're mind set on the 1295 go for it!
