Italian for flute is "flauto". Italian "flautista" is a female flutist. In all of those flautisti, there is bound to be a flautisto every now and again. But then, we don't call the instrument a "flaut" in English, so why use the high-falutin' term "flautist"?
"Tuba player" is fine with me.
If we insist on holding to ethnic origins, would we then have "Glockenspielspieler" for someone who plays the glockenspiel?
