Jay, If one subscribes to Verdi's letter literally, why wouldn't one play a contrabass trombone? The cimbasso is an unwieldy contraption in comparison to the contrabass trombone. With at least an F trigger, a BBb contrabass trombone would offer the flexibility AND TIMBRE that Verdi was looking for in his "fourth trombone." Other than the 4 valves serving as a "comfort zone" for those of us [tubists] who may not be totally facile with the trombone slide, what advantages, if any, (for Verdi and other music) does the cimbasso offer over a contrabass trombone?
