I was at the concert. It was in Avery Fisher Hall. Rex played everything in unison with Mr. Jacobs except for the solos that Mr. Jacobs played by himself.
Bernstein DID go back and gave Jake a hug - said something to him and then they both laughed.
Afterwards, at the local "refreshment stand", Mr. Jacobs told Rex, Dave Fedderly (who also came in to hear the concert) and me that Bernstein said," Why are you retiring? - you a**hole!!!" We laughed so hard that I thought that we would be tossed out! After we quieted down, Jake said - "I knew he was only kidding, of course!"
I sure miss him.
