My opinion in this matter, and I think it agrees with some of the others, is that the very low notes are often not very playable, very audible or in tune, therefore they should most of the time not be played in an ensemble, unless maybe as a pedal note in an ending chord. I have been able to sound pedal notes several notes below the end of the piano for years. The only reason I experiment with them is loosen up my embrochure and help facilitate my playing of notes in the octave or so higher, when needed in regular playing. I agree with others that practicing playing the extreme high and low notes helps one to be able to play the regular fare more easily.
