Chuck, you're misunderstanding my comment. I didn't mean to imply that my MW cimbasso sounds anything like a tuba, because it doesn't. What I probably didn't state too clearly is that the MW cimbasso, compared to other cimbassi, sounds and (more importantly) feels closer to a tuba. That makes the learning curve a little less steep for someone like me who has never played trombone for anything more than a couple of minutes. That said, the sound is decidedly trombone, make no mistake. I feel the MW cimbasso requires a little less adjustment of approach on my part than other options would. That made it more attractive to me, since I'll still be doing the bulk of my playing on a tuba. I agree completely with you that if the cimbasso sounded like a tuba, why bother? As I've tried to indicate, mine doesn't and so the outcome is worthwhile.
