I have a "3/4" Rudy and ADORE it. I do use the 2nd valve slide kicker and find it works well. I think it would work in any situation except maybe 50+ peice orch playing Mahler or Prokofiev. Even then, it would work fine if you were subbing. I am lucky enough to have experience on the 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 rudys and I think they are ALL great horns. But for an "All-around" CC tuba, the 3/4 is AWESOME. And like Lee suggests, if you need to open up the 3/4 use a bigger mouthpiece and it responds well. And for what it's worth, I have played my 3/4 side by side to the Miraphone 186 and they are so close to the same size I would have needed calipers to really be able to decide which was bigger. Rudy's tubas, in my opinion, are one size bigger than listed, i.e. 3/4=4/4, 4/4=5/4 etc.
