I use sealer on every car that I paint. I use it one to protect the metal if the paint chips and seconed because it helps with color coverage(becasue it is tinted to match the paint color.). I haven't ever seen a clear sealer but there may be one out there. The lacquer that they use on instruments is the same as what was used as clear over paint, but they quit using it years ago because it would chip or peel off with time. I've used new automotive clears (ppg Global) on restorations in the chassis parts(looks good and protects against rust). There is no reason why you couldn't use it on a brass instrument, and it would look a thousand times better than the outdated laquer!!!
Hope that helps!
