Your initial idea COULD work well of course, but advising a young player to try to lacquer his instrument in a single, short post here is nothing short of ridiculous; possibly irresponsible too. You don't know the player or his circumstance.

This horn (beat up or not) could be the player's only instrument; not some project horn.

If the player is keen to try your lacquering idea (which MAY work very nicely), he'd be well advised to seek professional help/advise in person before and hopefully during the process.

No malice, I just don't think your initial advice was the best on this occasion...
And no, I can't claim to have invented fire or a self-playing tuba : )
