the only finalist. the brass section (who was the panel) has chosen their winner and now it sounds as though it's up to Lorin Maazel if he's hired or not. as i understand, he will play his solos and excerpts with the trombone section. he played for about two hours on thursday afternoon with the trombones. before the semis began, the candidates were told they would be allowed a short rehearsal afterwards with the trombones if they advanced. he must have been doing something great to stay in there for two hours! best of luck to Al. i hope he gets this gig.
