Below is another web site by Art Hovey. The Jeff Finderburk site given below gives some very practical "how to." The Art Hovey site suggests some alternatives and gives some scientific background so those interested in understanding how a tuba really works can even make up their own tuning schemes.

My own experience was that following the advice contained in these two web sites got me close, but not all the way there. To find the best tuning compromises required spending a lot of time playing, and slowly tweaking one slide at a time until I could get the best sound while maintaining good intonation. I do adjust the first valve slide while playing.
