After my initial post I thought about just what the desired end was; a tuba that could travel conveniently and play decently- but with no requirement whatsoever to project or interact with other musicians. Heck; playing in hotel rooms and GP medium tents has caused me to really hone the feather touch pianissimo end of things....... My abhorrent solution; I'm coupling a (turns out to be about 16.25 inches) length of PVC drain pipe of the appropriate diameter to fit (just about perfectly ) into the ring for the removable bell and it works just fine. I wouldn't exactly recommend it for use during your NYP audition but though slightly louder than most practice mutes it is way better sounding (I'm not claiming sonic excellence here), and about as durable and thrifty as things come.
