i have owned both of these horns (actually owned 2 different getzens) and thought that they were both great instruments - for the playing that i do, who i play with, and how i play the meinl was a better fit - i am sure you can find plenty of people that really like both/either
for me the getzen might be a little more fun to play, and i liked the sound behind the bell better, but found that the meinl worked better "out front". i also found that (for me) if i was not in great shape i sounded ok on the getzen, and if i was in great shape i sounded ok on the getzen - on the meinl i sound less ok when out of shape, and more than ok when in great shape...

definitely have your son play it for his teachers - often we found that the horn i sounded the best on was not the one my teacher sounded the best on...
