This question has been asked many, many times before and has led to impatience upon many people who frequent this list. No, you're not the first to get a rude and/or unhelpful response from a lister. My first suggestion, since this has been brought up so many times before is to search the archives. Most of the time questions like this fall flat because they're asked so often, but every once in a while some thoughtful discussions arise. The answer that appears most often is to try them all out yourself, for not everyone wants the same thing out of an instrument. I would also like to point out that not every horn responds in the same way in people's hands; just read some of the MW 2000 vs. 2155 posts below this one to get a sense of that. We also don't know if you have an F for some of the lighter repertoire. It's tough to use a 6/4 CC when you're asked to play an ophecleide part.

To answer your question, try them all. Consider them all. Once you have a feeling for what's out there, you can ask questions that will give you much more helpful responses than you will probably get from this post.
