My best friend back in university would let her trumpet tarnish on purpose until the bell turned black, then she only polished the inside of the bell, making the bright silver look even more bright with the contrast of the outer blackened tarnish. It looked really cool, and this was how she performed her grad recital!
The moral of the story: be lazy - sure - but be creative!
