Many believe that piston horns have an inherently brighter sound and that a funnel cup will darken it, whereas rotary horns are darker and benefit from the brighter sound of a bowl cup. This seems to be the general trend for most people, but there are always exceptions.
Personally, I get the reverse, but I think that it comes from how the horn blows. I tend to get a brighter sound from horns and mouthpieces that blow very freely and get a darker sound with more resistance. Funnel cups generally have less resistance.
You need to play test, record yourself, and get the opinions of others. Play what sounds best, feels right, and what you can control.
