Phantom power provides juice for condenser mikes. It can come from a battery in the mike, an external power box, or a mixer. Almost all modern mixers have a switch to turn phantom power on and off, so turn it on and save on batteries. If you're not using a mixer, pop a battery into the mike (usually a single AA). If you leave a mike turned on when it's not in use, though, you'll drain the battery prematurely.
