The 641 and 642 are very similar but the 641 is no longer made. It has an 11" bell where as the 642 has a 12" bell. The bell on the 641 is one-piece construction where the 642 is soldered (at least that's what they say, but you sure can't see any seam). For this reason, some prefer the 641. I have a 641 myself but have played both. In my opinion, the 642 responds a bit better in the lower range and may project a little better. The width beneath the valves is a bit wider on the 642 so a valve trough made by Yamaha will fit. To fit this trough on the 641 you'll need to shorten it some. Also the angle of the leadpipe is a bit different between the two. I like the feel of the valve buttons on the 641 better than the 642... just a bit concave on the pearl inserts.

Hope this helps.
