I second the motion to using common carriers, and ones that have experience shipping instruments. There is a carrier in the Chicago area, Admiral Air, which I have used and things arrived safely. And the insurance is reasonable. You can ship door to door, full insurance, for $100-$200 depending on size. These types of carriers have less transfers than someone like UPS, thus less chance to be damaged.
