Clearly the best way is to lug the thing in to the repair shop. Just as clearly the best is sometimes simply not within financial reach. Genrally a quick sharp knock will free a stuch slide. The key is to avoid damage while applying the knock. A wood dowel or other cylindrical object placed inside the crook (as big as will fit to maximise the surface contact area and minimise the chance of dings) and then rapped firmly with a hammer will usually free up the slide. Don't wham it with all your force; you'll wind up denting the slide or distorting the junction of the slide and the valve set. Don't use a rope or such to pull on the slide. The force required to free a stuck slide through smoothly applied pulling force is way greater than the force required to tap it free. You'll very likely pull the whole slide assembly out of whack if you go along those lines. You could probably spring for a fairly useable "stuck slide puller" kit from any major music retailer or Ferree's or Votaw; this would enhance your chances of success; but at that point you could simply have lugged it in and had someone who knows what they're doing do it right. Good luck.
