I currently play both types. I play a Miraphone 188 and a Meinl F (both rotary) for ensembles and solo work and play a Yamaha 621 CC (piston) in a brass quintet. The only big difference for me (counting that these are different sized horns) is the feel of the valves. Once I've played on one or the other for a few minutes I get the feel of the valves and am fine. I haven't noticed any difference in sound, response, or valve speed. The most important thing is the horn itself. I play my Miraphone 188 because it's a really sweet horn, not because I feel the 5 rotors might give me an advantage over a piston horn. I'm currently going to purchase a Yamaha 822 F to replace the Meinl I'm playing now. Again, I'm choosing it because it's a good horn, not because it's piston.
