happened the other day when I was cleaning out a utilty closet and came across my old York BBb helicon. I couldn't resist playing a little on it, seeing as how the bit and a mouthpiece were still in it.

Mind you, this is a 0.655" bore horn, not the bigger York 0.750". It was a real joy to see how easily notes just popped out, even pedal and privledged tones.

Then I looked at the mouthpiece I was playing on--a Bach 1G bassbone mouthpiece, which is smaller than just about any tuba mouthpiece. I got out a Bach 18 (with a special small shank) and playing wasn't nearly as gratifying.

None of which is scientific, but it does make me wonder about the "small mouthpiece-large bore" idea. In particular, most of the antique American tuba mouthpieces that I've run across have been on the small side and probably used on small-bore horns.

Just tossing my own anecdote into the stew...
