I played a Mozart Requiem with him in Spain about 10 years ago, and I asked him if he knew who the bionic bass trombone player of the infamous SNO recordings was...he told me Bob Hughes. If you listen closely, the bass trombone sound is somewhat less on recordings ca. 1988-89 and later...about the time that Hughes moved on to replace Ray Premru in the Philharmonia.
