The trigger does indeed move the main tuning slide. It is positioned so that the player can activate it with his/her left hand (near the compensating 4th valve) and lower the pich of the horn. It is used mostly (I think) for the F - E- -E flat above the bass clef staff that are typically above pitch. A spring mechanism pulls the slide back into position when the lever is released (think of a whammy bar on guitar). One of the neatest things about it is the guard to keep the greasy mechanism off the performers clothes. Some euphonium players have bellies that touch the back of the instrument.
