It certainly helps open up your ears. I'd played bass trombone in big bands for years, and in the orchestra once or twice, but without another tubist so the role wasn't terribly different.. playing 2nd trombone in a 3 trombone + tuba section was something completely different, though! Really opened up my ears, and got me into a new mode of 'listening' to the music.
