It's funny you should post this question; I was just asking George Wall (tubist in the Royal Opera House) about this photo last week.

He says he has no idea what sort of horn this was. It's certainly bigger than the "standard" f tuba of the time. I wonder if it was the 6/4 monster tuba of its day.

As for the crack about what British people look like today, you apparently haven't been to Britain in the past 75 years. These guys are obviously from Cleveland.
