yeah, I doubt if the kid needs it, but then again at least 80% of the folks who come into my store to purchase "step-up" (a term that irks me) instruments do not need them. They "need" to practice, or to go on to some other endeavor and work to accel at it.

Too many times on this bbs I've mentioned Jesse Allen, who played a Conn fiberglass 36K sousaphone (a "step-up" from the rotten old sousaphones formerly at his disposal) from 9th through 12th grade. This was in the early 70's during the height of the Vietnam War. When he graduated, EVERYone between 18 and 25 who played a wind instrument very well at all was trying to get into a military band, to avoid being drafted into the infantry. Jesse auditioned for the Army on the school's 36K, was accepted into an Army band, and within a few months was promoted to the D.C. band...the first time he ever had access to a four-valve tuba.
