Its definately not your place to straighten him out about his playing. Offer him some friendly advice outside of rehearsal and then, if he doesn't want it, leave him alone. At that point, I would speak to the band director if its really a problem. Of course, the best idea is to be a good example (like someone else mentioned) and tend to your own playing. I know its hard to have some yo-yo messing things up but you don't want to commit what I feel is a "mortal sin" of music and bad mouth an individual's playing in rehearsal. Offer some encouragement and set the example. Remember, we all had to struggle at some point in our lives.
