Gotta say Tony here makes a very valid point. My first thoughts when reading the "only if you want to play in tune" post was Harvey Phillips. I believe the recordings I have heard of him were on his 4 valve Conn, and played very well in tune. Both Charles (pictured holding a 184-5U in my old Mirafone catalog) and Harvey (Holton anyone?) are heavy hitters and could easily play whatever horn they wanted, something not available to many of us. That said, I doubt I would buy a CC horn with less than 5 valves. My own rule of thumb: BBb 4-valves, CC 5-valves, F 5-valve minimum, Eb 4 valve compensating. With many horns to choose from in my collection, I mostly use a compensating Eb, and a pretty small one at that. It does not allow me to take intonation for granted, but then what horn REALLY does.
