My impression now, in light of this interesting research, is that I was correct in hunching that the valve mechanism really doesn't do anything to affect the horn, but the length of the leadpipe has quite a bit to do with it!

I remember in college hearing from my teacjer that Gebr. Alexander was experimenting with a short leadpipe on their 4/4 rotary CC, but I had heard that it was supposed to improve intonation! I wonder if this was just based on the idea that old American tubas had fewer intonation problems.
