I just pulled up that article, and WOW. I wish somebody did that a long time ago. I just wanted to point out one important thing: Rotary trumpets have SHORTER leadpipes and more 'flare' than piston trumpets, thus giving them an almost fluegelhorn sound (cue Chuck Mangone). Rotary tubas have a LONGER leadpipe than piston tubas, with the flare starting later on them. If the conclusion reached in the paper says that it is the valve position and not the valve type, then the piston vs. rotary results for the tuba should be the EXACT OPPOSITE of what was discovered on the trumpet.
Any thoughts, guys?
