Barry,
The 983 does have a decent low end. That's what makes it a good smaller horn. It's easy to play high and lows.
I would say the most unergonomic thing about would be the thumbring. I took mine off. It sits comfortably on the lap, and I would think that it would for anyone over 5'3". I haven't found the need for a stand since it's so small and light. (I think it's 18 pounds or something). The leadpipe is rather short. It took me some getting used to, my head being so close to the bell and all. But overall, I totally endorse this horn. Plus, the Besson case is really nice. I don't really know if it's flight safe, though it claims to be. It's lightweight, it's very rollable, and it takes the abuse of doors slamming on it.
