JR,
I have never heard of someone converting a contrabass bugle; I'm sure it could be done, but I personally wouldn't recommend it. I played one of those God awful things for three summers with the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, and I NEVER played one that I would even consider buying...no matter what modifications may be done. If any particular one could possibly work, I would think it would be a Kanstul (used by Blue Devils and Santa Clara Vanguard), but those are 3 valved. The single valved ones are most certainly pre-1980's, and the 2 valve versions you have found were probably built pre-1990's (built for running around a football field while playing as loud as possible). If you have found one that you really like, then best of luck. Please don't take this as a slam towards drum corps; I loved my time in the activity, and it's what initially got me interested music.
