My St. Petersburg rotory valves seem to work quite well. Could be yours should be disassembled, cleaned and then given a good reoiling with a good quality rotory valve oil such as Hetman's. If that doesn't help, perhaps they were not properly honed. I don't know if that is a job that every repair shop could do, but since rehoning is a standard periodic maintance job for French horns, I would think that a tuba would not present too great a problem for a qualified repairman. Regardless of its cost, any instrument's valve system should function properly. It might be worth writing to Frieder and seeing if he has any suggestions. If this has been a problem with others, he may have a simple solution.
