Most car stereo shops sell a CD to "tape" adapter that has a 1/8" mini stereo plug on one end attached to a cassete-tape dummy on the other.
It enables you to plug anything line-level into anything else that plays tapes.
That said, for about $30, you could plug your silent brass mute into your walkman.
I have no idea if this would be any better than what they're doing, but I suppose it's worth a shot..
