Size may not make a difference, but then again it may. I've heard
a couple of recordings and seen/heard a couple concert where the
tubist, who I'm sure is an otherwise great player, hauls out
a sewer pipe of an instrument and lo and behold, has a sewer pipe
sound! All he/she can do is blat and splat around without any core
to his/her tone. Granted, I am only a student, but I have heard
this stuff before. I played on a 3-valve Holton 6/4 BBb for
three years in high school. Ater reaching my max. potential on
that horn, the difference became immediately noticeable (with
help from my teacher) when I got a brand new Miraphone 186 CC.
My point? There's only so much you can do on a sewer pipe to
make it sound good before it can't compete with more versatile
horns. Take it for what it's worth.
