I had the same problem here. I got a PT-3 tuba my senior year and for some reason it was ALWAYS sharp and had major tuning problems. Then this army band tuba player told me I needed a larger shank, like you said. I had a Bach 18 and my PT-3 was a large bore close to the MW 2145. So I got a PT-50 (the biggest one) and the PT-86 (Mr. Tucci told me that this is the all-around one). And now, the intonation on my PT-3 is awsome. It all has to do with how far the mouthpiece is in the tuba. My Bach 18 went in all the way so that made it super sharp. But with my PT's, it was in the perfect amount.
