When I was in high school I played a 3B. Our school had 2 3B slide trombones with F attachment, and 2 3B valve trombones. I was using the slide with the F attach, but would often remove the slide and add the valve section on songs that sounded better on valve. Also with the addition of the F attachment I didn't have the 1+3, and 1+2+3 intonation problems since I was able to play those note on the F attachment. The F attachment on the valve trombone pretty much acted as a 4th valve.
