Until I recently bought a Stewart Stand (which I would heartily recommend) I used two of those black rubber drum practice pads stacked on top of each other on the chair between my legs. I trimmed off most of the thin part except for a little lip which I would sit on to hold it in place. I used to place the pads on the chair between my legs and rest the tuba on thick part. I needed something to raise my mouthpiece about 2 inches up to my mouth and this was just the right height. I used this set up for 10 years. It was great because if you had a small or uneven chair it still held the horn in place. I do not like to set the tuba on my lap as some people prefer. ken k
