Do yourself a favor.....find a copy of the original orchestral score. You'll notice that the "optional" stuff wasn't what Vaughan Williams wrote in the first place. There are several wrong notes (and a couple of wrong rhythms in the 1st mvmt). You'll also find that the original cadenza in the 3rd is slightly different....by 2 measures.

Check out the Michael Lind or John Fletcher recordings. They play the original. Patrick Harrild does the more popular "printed" version. All very tastful and played really well. It's your job as a musician and as the soloist to decide what to play. But be mindful of what the composer intended.
